Bungou Stray Dogs aka Bungo Sutorei Doggusu (in Japanese) is a supernatural action anime and an adaption of manga series with the same name. The manga was first published on December 4, 2012, and was written and illustrated by Kafka Asagiri and Sango Harukawa respectively. (Check: Dog Quotes.)

A few later, the manga was picked up to be adapted into a television anime series. Its first season premiered on April 7, 2016, and became an immediate hit among the manga fans and newcomers alike. Its second installment released on October 6, 2016. However, the third season arrived in 2019.

Since then, the fans have been eagerly waiting for the fourth season to arrive. Until it arrives, here we have everything related to it such as its probable release date, characters, plot, where to watch its English dub/sub previous episodes online, etc.

Bungou Stray Dogs Season 4 Release Date: When is its premiere?

The third installment released on April 12th 2019, and its final episode aired on June 28 the same year. If you are an avid fan, then you may remember that an original video animation (OVA) special episode titled Bungou Stray Dogs: Hitori Ayumu was released in 2017. It was followed by an anime movie titled Bungou Stray Dogs: Dead Apple on March 3, 2018.

The fans well received the OVA and the movie as well as the season 3. For the next season in the series, we don’t have an official update. But, considering the popularity of the anime, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it being renewed for another season. The 3rd installment took almost 3 years to come out.

So, the best we can guess is that if it gets renewed, it would premiere sometime in 2022. Hence, you need to stick with us as we will update this section with the latest information available in time.

Bungou Stray Dogs Season 4 English Dub

It’s fortunate for the English fans of the anime as Bungou Stray Dogs is also dubbed in English language. The creator employs talented voice actors for this purpose. The BSD season 3 was dubbed in English and released on May 17, 2019. The dubbed episodes of the anime are available to be watched online on FUNimation and Crunchyroll.

Bungou Stray Dogs Plot

It is a fantasy anime series which revolves around a group of detectives with supernatural powers. The emphasis is put on a young man named Atsushi Nakajima. In the beginning, Atsushi is featured growing up in an orphanage. In the meantime, a mystical tiger starts plaguing the orphanage.

Amazingly, Atsushi is the only person who is aware of that mystical tiger. Under the suspicion, the orphanage management kicks out him. Then, he is left with no food and nowhere to go. On the verge of death, Atsushi is met with another bizzare accident which turns his life upside down.

Once at a riverbank, he got to save a man named Osamu Dazai from drowing into the river. Atsushi’s life took a completely different turn due to this incident. Upon saving Osamu, he gets to know that Osamu is a supernatural detective investigating the same mystical tiger. Thus, he joins Osamu’s team. The trio managed to solve the mystery.

Their detective agency is called the Armed Detective Agency. Then, the show takes a different turn as it follows the adventures and misadventures of Atsushi and company as they try to solve unusual and bizarre cases for the police. The show also deals with the tensions between an American supernatural organization called The Guild, the Armed Detective Agency, and their eternal rivals – the Port Mafia. These three organization fights among themselves for the supremacy.

Bungou Stray Dogs Characters

There is an interesting point of view as far as the naming of this anime’s characters is concerned. They are either named after famous authors and/or literary characters. Here, you can also find a little about the character’s backgrounds.

  • Atsushi Nakajima: The name has been taken from the 20th century Japanese author Atsushi Nakajima. He is the main protagonist of the anime show. The character is based on a character from one of the author’s short stories, The Tiger Man. In the anime, after being kicked out of the orphanage, he becomes a part of the Armed Detective Agency. After the case of mysterious tiger gets concluded, Atsushi finds a new ability to transform himself into a white tiger and gains the ability to heal from any kind of wound.
  • Osamu Dazai: He is another important character in the show. The name’s idea has been taken from the foremost fiction writers in Japan in the 20th century. He is also known as the “suicide maniac”. Osamu is prone to harming himself and is also an unstable character. But, he has powerful abilities, and takes the young detective under his wing, and gives him the required training. He is also an ex-member of the Port Mafia who is an intelligent, cunning, and violent character. But, he hides these characteristics under his charming and carefree personality.
  • Doppo Kunikida: He is not a main character in the anime. However, he is quite an important personality to the events which takes place in the show as Doppo is the partner of Osamu. The naming has been done based on the 19th century Japanese author Doppo Kunikida. Based on the show, Doppo is featured as a meticulous planner who likes planning everything down to perfection. Having an organized nature, Doppo likes to plan everything ahead and write his plans in a notebook named ‘Ideals’ on the cover. On an interesting side, it is also linked to his powers which allows him to will any notebook-sized object into existence by writing in it.

Apart from the above characters, there are several others in the Armed Detective Agency who play an important role. Most of them are named after famous Japanese authors. Some of them are – Ranpo Edogawa , Junichirō Tanizaki, Kenji Miyazawa, Akiko Yosano, Yukichi Fukuzawa, Kyōka Izumi, and Katai Tayama, etc.

Similarly, the characters of the Port Mafia are also named after famous Japanese authors like Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, Chūya Nakahara, Ichiyō Higuchi, Motojirō Kajī, Ryuurou Hirotsu, Michizō Tachihara, and Ougai Mori. Following the concept, the members of The Guild are named similarly.

Some of the important The Guild members named after famous western authors include F. Scott Fitzgerald, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Margaret Mitchell, Nathaniel Hawthorne, John Steinbeck, H. P. Lovecraft, Herman Melville, Mark Twain and Edgar Allan Poe. Other important characters include Agatha Christie, André Gide, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Arthur Rimbaud, and Mizuki Tsujimura, to name a few. These are named after authors.
