Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer Thackeray – a biopic based on the life of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackray earned Rs 6 crore on first Friday at the box office. The collection for which came from Maharashtra mainly. As expected, it couldn’t overcome Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika. Two biopic movies released on the same day caused a clash. The political drama directed by Abhijit Panse earned the maximum amount from its Marathi version. Made on an ordinary budget of Rs 30-40 crore, it did a decent business at the box office. Now, it is going to enjoy an extended first weekend due to Saturday being the 70th Republic Day of India that means a full holiday.
As per the expectations, Thackeray should witness an increase in its income. The movie has been released in two versions – Hindi and Marathi. Manikarnika starring Kangana collected Rs 8.75 cr on its opening Friday. It is big budget flick made on a budget of over Rs 100 cr. It’s a biopic that tells the story of the Queen of Jhansi – Rani Lakshmi Bai who was an epic warrior and great freedom fighter.
Thackeray started on a low note yesterday – being a normal working day. But, the footfalls increased towards the end of the day and thus, managed to earn a decent amount. Upon its release, the film got mixed reviews from the film critics – but majority of them appreciated the role played by lead actor – Nawazuddin.
Saturday – Rs 4.5 cr
Directed by Abhijit Panse and written by Sanjay Raut, the film stars Nawazuddin, Amrita Rao, Laxman Singh Rajput, and Radha Sagar in important roles. If the movie gets an outstanding word of mouth, then it has the potential to become a blockbuster. Being made on a leader who had a cult following in Maratha region, the film has real good chances to excel in the region.
It the flick gets to witness a big turnaround in Hindi region – especially in Delhi and UP region, then it will end up with a very good collection scenario. There are expectations from the movie due to Republic day holiday that can really push the film. However, the real story will start from Monday, i.e., post holiday time.
Speaking of 2nd day, Thackeray saw an increase in the morning occupancy compared to Friday’s. It witnessed an increase of around 30% which is really a good thing about it. Today’s total collection should touch the double digits. However, the exact numbers will only be available by morning.
