Thackeray – a biopic film made on the life story of Shiv Sena founder Balashaeb Thackeray has managed to collect Rs 27.85 cr at the box office in the first 5 days of release. The majority of its collection has come up from its Marathi version, though it was also released in Hindi. It got an exception response from Maharashtra. (check: Manikarnika box office collection.)
The biographical drama starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead role collected Rs 22.90 crores on the opening weekend – collecting Rs 6 cr on Friday, Rs 10 cr on Saturday, and Rs 6.90 cr on Sunday. The film directed by Abhijit Panse witnessed a drop of around 54% percent on Monday from Friday and earned Rs 2.75 cr. It experienced a further drop on Tuesday and minted only Rs 2.20 crores.
Late Bal Thackeray was a politician from Maharashtra and had a cult following. Talking about the film’s Hindi version, it has managed to collect only Rs 13.05 cr in the first days of business. It looks like that first week collection will be somewhere around Rs 15 crores. Going by the declining trend, it would be out from all regions except Maharashtra in the second week.
It was released alongside Kangana Ranaut’s magnum opus Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. She co-directed the film with director Krish. It has already crossed the mark of Rs 50 cr in five days at the box office. Despite garnering positive word of mouth from the audience, its business now seems divided. It is faring well in some circuits, but not in others.
Upon its release, Thackeray got mixed reviews from the film critics, but majority of them appreciated the performance of Nawazuddin as the leader. The critics’ reviews couldn’t stop the flick from faring well in the first weekend. It garnered a strong positive word of mouth in the Maharashtraian region.
Besides Nawazuddin, the film stars Amrita Rao in lead role as his wife – Meena. Amrita was last seen in 2013 release Satyagrapha alongside Amitabh Bachchan.
As far as its 6th day collection is concerned, Thackeray started on a slow note on Wednesday. The occupancy rate was still reported to be declining and a little down compared to yesterday. It has managed to collect Rs 1.5 cr from both its Hindi and Marathi version. What do you think about its lifetime collections?
