HBO’s True Detective gave its viewers a delight when it returned for season 3 after being on hiatus for several years. But, will TD return for season 4 too? And if so, when would it be releasing? It is inherently an anthology series that enables it to come and go as its creator and primary writer please. (Check: Mindhunter Season 2.)

So, you shouldn’t be surprised that it took around three years to premiere even when it was announced back in 2016. The series stars Mahershala Ali as Detective Wayne Hays and Stephen Dorff as Detective/Lieutenant Roland West. The third installment was focused on the murder of Will Purcell and the disapperance of his sister – Julie Purcell.

The third season confirmed that it existed in the same world as season 1. While watching, we got to know that the stories from both the seasons even connected to each other. Maybe True Detective’s fourth season would be a sequel to it or based in the same universe.

Just like previous seasons, the upcoming installment of the show would be another anthology story. However, there is a lot to make clear about the series’ future. As of now, nothing can be claimed to be true/certain. The 3rd season of True Detective was an undoubted return. Here is everything we know about the potential season 4.

True Detective Season 4 Renewal

As of March 2019, HBO hasn’t officially ordered the TD season 4. But, you should know that it will happen eventually. In January 2014, when the first installment premiered, HBO signed a two-year agreement with Pizzolatto. It guaranteed the second season. But, rushing into producing the second installment right after the first one, ultimately led to a disappointing sophomore season. That’s the reason for taking sufficient amount of time in developing the third season.

HBO confirmed its plans for True Detective’s third installment after the second one premiered. It is of no doubt that S3 was better than S2. In order to make a better S4, HBO should take ample time. If that’s the case, the best case scenario for the fans to expect an announcement is the TCA summer press tour. It’s where HBO has been making announcements about past and upcoming shows for a long time now.

True Detective Season 4 Release Date

Since the series hasn’t been officially renewed yet, we can’t expect any True Detective season 4 release date. The fans shouldn’t expect to see the upcoming season by early 2020. But, we can hope for its release in early 2021.

As season three was very good, HBO shouldn’t jump the gun and hurry with the next one. It should give Pizzolatto some time to breathe and digest the success, and also to create a new story that’s must be worthy of being told as it’s the most important thing in continuing this series.

True Detective Season 4 Story: Spoilers

The new storyline will be another anthology story from multiple time periods. Pizzolatto has worked out quite well on its bread and butter. Since 2014, the fans have been waiting to see the return of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

The upcoming installment could potentially be a sequel to season 1, but nothing can be said at this point of time. The more likely thing that fans would get to see that next season continue to expand upon the story of the child kidnapping ring. But, for it, we will have to wait and watch how it unfolds.

True Detective Season 4 Cast

So far, a new set of lead characters has been featured in every season. Matthew McConaughey led the first installment as Rust Cable, with Woody Harrelson as Marty Hart. They were a pair of Louisiana State Police homicide detectives.

Then, the Californa-set follow-up had Colin Farrell as Detective Ray Velcoro, Rachel McAdams as Detective Sergeant Ani Bezzerides, Taylor Kitsch as Officer Paul Woodrugh, and Vince Vaughn as career criminal Frank Semyon.

In the most recent installment, Ali played Arkansas State Police detective Wayne Hays, and Stephen Dorff as his partner Roland West. It’s possible that a fourth season of True Detective may introduce a new lead cast. However, Dorff revealed that the creator Nic Pizzolatto would like to do something one day where he gets to bring back all of the characters, like Rust Cohle.

Could the fourth installment of True Detective end up being an Avengers-style team-up?
