The United Nations has finally listed Masood Azhar as the global terrorist. He is the chief of terrorist organization named Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). Actually, he founded it in 2000. The listing can be seen as a massive diplomatic victory for India.

The UN security council has finally named his global terrorist. Today, China lifted its hold on the Azhar’s listing as a global terrorist. It’s already known that China has many times placed a hold on it citing some ‘technicalities’ on naming him one.

The US, the UK, and France had initiated the proposal for naming him the global terror head after the Pulwama attack in February 2019. (Check: How to watch Game of Thrones online.)

It seems that China’s decision has come as a result of international pressure. A large proportion of the UN countries were already in favor of blacklisting the Pakistan-based terror organization’s head.

The United States moved a draft resolution directly in the UN Security Council. It was then supported by France and the UK to blacklist the Pakistan-based terror organization’s chief.

Earlier in 2009, India had already proposed to designed Azhar a terrorist. Then, again in 2016, India approached the UN with the same proposal. India has the supported of the US, the United Kingdom, and France.

With the P3 support, India moved the proposal in the UN 1267 Sanctions Committee to ban Azhar. He is also said to be the mastermind of the terrorist attack on the air base in Pathankot in January 2016.

In 2017, the P3 nations moved a similar proposal again. However, on all occasions China, a veto-wielding permanent member of the Security Council, blocked India’s proposal from being adopted by the Sanctions Committee.

In a tweet, India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UN, Syed Akbaruddin said, big and small nations all join together for this and India is grateful to all for their support. A “global terrorist” designation will subject Azhar to an assets freeze, travel ban and an arms embargo.
